We are delighted to launch our new educational resource. Developed with experts from across the iNNO SED project, including colleagues at the Sustainability Institute at University College Cork (UCC) and Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), the iNNOSED Sediment Academy is a five lesson learning tool suitable for audiences of 14yrs and upward to learn about sediment and why sediment and sediment management is important for healthy and vibrant rivers.
The lessons use a variety of formats including animations, images, video, text and quizzes to help provide a deeper understanding of the world of sediment. Each lesson includes a short quiz at the end to help you see how much you’ve learned!
The five lessons cover a range of sediment related information to:
Lesson 1: Introduction to sediments, why they are important, where they come from, the process of erosion and weathering, sediment balance
Lesson 2: Presents an initial overview of the sediment grain journey and maps processes of erosion and weathering and movement- explaining the way these grains are transported from streams to rivers all the while impacted by river flow, to their deposition potentially long distances from where they originated.
Lesson 3: Here, focus turns to riverine sediment transport and the bidirectional relationship between the sediment and the river.
Lesson 4: This lesson looks at the impact of human activities on the natural processes of sediments and rivers and highlights several challenges and solutions.
Lesson 5: Provides a brief insight into challenges in maintaining sediment balance and the importance of sediment management in providing long term stability in river basin systems.
