What is iNNO SED?

iNNO SED is a Horizon Europe project with partners from all along the Danube. We are exploring innovative, sustainable and scientifically grounded solutions for sediment management for the Danube River Basin.

What are sediments?

Sediments include a wide variety of small solid organic and inorganic material that can travel by air, water, ice or gravity. Sand, mud and gravel are all known forms of inorganic sediments, while leftovers from dead organisms can leave behind substantial amounts of particulate matter.

Sediments are often an overlooked component of river systems, but they influence habitats and act as socio-economic, environmental and geomorphological resources. Sediments function as sources and sinks for contaminants and fertile soils while material from flash floods can destroy affected areas.

Concept

The iNNO SED concept is built upon three foundational pillars: Scientific Pillar 1, Scientific Pillar 2, and the Socio-economy and Environment in Pillar 3 as shown in the iNNO SED visual concept. On top of our three Pillars are the iNNO SED Demonstration Actions, represented in the lighthouse's tower, which includes the Knowledge Centre at its very top.
